BMW is recalling 917,106 vehicles, many for the third time, over fears a faulty heater could cause engine fires.

In a recall notice posted by the U.S. National Highway Transport Safety Agency (NHSTA), the company says it is recalling many of its 3 Series, 5 Series, 1 Series, X5, X3 and Z4 vehicles model years 2006 through 2013 because the heater for the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve may short circuit.

“An electrical short can cause the PCV valve to overheat, increasing the risk of a fire while driving, or soon after driving when parked,” the recall notice says.

According to the company, the valve heater in the PCV system could have defects and “may not have been produced by the supplier to specifications,” which could, over time, lead to overheating.

The recall notice says that drivers could get a warning of the issue through the illumination of the Malfunction Indicator Lamp. It adds that smoke may be noticeable from the area near the engine compartment and a plastic burning odor may also be noticeable.

This recall expands on two previous NHTSA recalls 17V-683 and 19V-273, for the same issue, which remained unresolved. The company says the fix for the problem is currently being developed.

Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed Apr. 25, 2022. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

In August 2021, BMW had to issue two separate recalls over issues that posed safety risks to drivers. In the first, a software problem was thought to be affecting the brake assist in more than 50,000 BMW cars and SUVs. The BMW brake assist may fail to function in certain conditions, making braking harder and increasing stopping distances, the automaker warned.

In the second, BMW recalled more than 21,000 vehicles, including several 2021 models, as well as the Toyota Supra, for a defective safety belt component that may affect the ability of owners to correctly install car seats in certain vehicles. The automatic locking device on the safety belt retractor may malfunction in vehicles manufactured between Nov 30, 2020, and Feb 12, 2021, the recall notice explained.

My 2011 128i has been effected by the PCV recall since March 2022. Smoking profusely and smelling like burning electronics. This happened while my family and I were in the car. This recall has occurred on numerous BMW’s with more than 917,00 needing to be recalled. Some people have had their cars explode because of this. These cars are completely unsafe to drive. This is the THIRD recall for the same part also. I called Crevier BMW on 6/21/22 and they said a fix wont be available for several months. This is unacceptable

I have an 06 bmw 325i. And a couple weeks ago, after being parked for 12 + hours, it caught on fire. The keys were literally not in the ignition either. I got it towed to the dealership where they seemed as if they were going to help me with this issue. Being that the safety recall literally explains my car exactly. Down to the prior performance of the car, as well as the event of the fire. I figured they were going to take care of me. However now I am basically being told that I am shit out of luck. I was told that the fire was in fact caused by an engine oil leak oppose to what the recall was stating. And since the car is 16 years old, and it hasn’t been serviced at a bmw dealership since 2012. I guess it’s a normal thing for them to just catch on fire. And I’m not a mechanic, but I do have the internet, and an engine oil leak is a sign of the PCV Valve (recall) malfunctioning. Now I’m 2 weeks past the day that I was supposed to return the rental. And I don’t know what to do.

My 2010 BMW 550i GT has been a nightmare. First engine had to be replaced at 77,000 because the care kept stalling without warning. They replaced the engine after I fought with them. 51,000 miles later, they are recommending a 2nd engine replacement at my expense because the car reeks of gas through the vents when you crank it up and let it idle. They initially offered me a measly $2k to buy a new BMW and now don’t want to offer anything. 2 independent mechanics have told me the car is a risk for fire or explosion and not to drive it. BMW knows all this and refuses to do anything including refusing to even buy back the car.

The potential for fire is real in this recall. People have had the car set on fire while in their garage, causing there houses to burn down. The fact that the potential for fire exists, no remedy is available as per BMW yet they only say to stop driving, exit vehicle, call for a tow (they will reimburse you) THEN WHAT??????? Do I walk home from there? Walk to work? There is no plan for anything outside of them fixing the problem ONCE THE REMEDY IS AVAILABLE. Last time, it took 2 years! What kind of nonsense is this? I think it is time for a Class Action Suit to be filed.

When will this end with bmw and pcv valve heater. This is my second time. With the problem.

Vista of California reclacing recall on injectors. They want to change 3 and I have to pay for 3 others. The recall in January of 2022 is clear to replace at their cost all 6 for $725 pus tax. Could use some help with this recall issue. Kirk @ kirkelder007@hotmail.com
