BMW has recalled almost 1 million vehicles that were previously recalled in 2017 and 2019 for the same problem.

The recall includes 917,106 vehicles, model years 2006 to 2013, that were produced between Jan.19, 2005, and Oct. 9, 2013, according to documents filed with the U.S. Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

BMW said, “The issue involves the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) valve heater (blow-by-heater). Due to supplier production issues, this could lead to a short circuit. In extremely rare cases, this could increase the risk of a fire.

Similar recalls were conducted in 2017 (17V-683) and 2019 (19V-273) for Model Years 2006-2011. Most of the vehicles in those recalls are in this new recall, and now includes Model Year 2012 and 2013. Vehicles with the N52T engine are no longer affected.”

BMW said it is working on a remedy to the problem. Letters will be sent to car owners in March and April.

The recall involves 5 Series, 3 Series, Z4, X3, X5 and 1 Series vehicles.

BMW said, “The possibility of this issue occurring is extremely rare.”

However, owners should stop driving the vehicle if they see smoke from the area near the engine compartment or smell smoke or an odor of plastic burning.
