Amsterdam couple Rob Versloot and Inge Brüll have made a real-estate hole-in-one with their second home—a 4,200-square-foot villa located in Bergen, the Netherlands, a North Sea community 30 miles northwest of the Dutch capital.

The couple paid 1.125 million euros, or $1.28 million, for the 1/3-acre lot and its 1970s teardown home in 2017, when the housing market in Amsterdam was taking off but prices elsewhere in the country were flat. For the new build, they wanted a weekend house that could later serve as a retirement base. They wanted something close to nature and close to their Amsterdam townhouse but with easy access to Holland’s Schiphol Airport, which Mr. Versloot, a 54-year-old CEO of a European food conglomerate, flies through a few times a week.
