Car Review: 2022 Toyota GR Supra 2.0 gives you fun with a smaller engine and price tag - WTOP News

This is the third new generation Toyota Supra that I’ve driven. This new Supra comes with a friendlier starting price tag than the last one I drove in 2021. The biggest reason for the lower price is a smaller four-cylinder turbo engine powering this sleek sports car.

While not as quick as the six-cylinder version, this car still packs 255hp and never feels underpowered, only superfast like the six-cylinder version. The automatic transmission is excellent and always seems to be in the correct gear. A manual would be a welcome option, but it will not be offered in the four-cylinder Supra.

The Supra 2.0’s handling is a major highlight of this car. It is alive in the corners and it really enjoys being pushed and rewards you with high handling limits. This is a small, low car so you are pretty much looking up to anything on the road around you. You’ll need to keep a close eye when changing lanes as there are some blind spots due to the swoopy body style of this ride.

Toyota gave the Supra a look that stands out especially in the bright Nitro Yellow paint. The latest Supra is full of curves, bulging fenders and slots for vents on the hood. It has the classic sports car look with a longer hood, a short body and that sleek hatchback style that ends with a duckbill spoiler at the rear end of the car.

Hop inside and you’ll notice the 2022 Toyota Supra does not have much of Toyota’s influence. The cockpit, HVAC and audio controls come from BMW. The Alcantara leather bucket seats are good at keeping you planted in and comfortable enough for shorter trips. Taller drivers will find this a tight fit and might have some trouble getting in and out of this low-slung sports car.

Cost: $43,190; as tested $48,125 MPG: 25 mpg city and 32 mpg highway; I managed 27.6 mpg in 248 miles of mixed driving. Safety: pre-collision system with pedestrian detection; dynamic radar cruise control; lane departure alert with steering assist; automatic high beams; blind spot monitor; rear cross traffic alert; parking sensors with emergency braking function Options: $3,485 safety & technology package; $425 premium color; $1,025 delivery, processing and handling fee Things to know: The 2022 GR Supra 2.0 comes with an easier price and still packs a fun-to-drive car that will give you thrills.
