In 24 hours, Rockland Police dealt with a threat of armed violence and, in a separate case, a homeowner who found a grenade.

Thursday, July 28th, started with a scary situation involving some juveniles. Rockland Police say they received a 911 call at around 2:00 in the morning from a juvenile who told them they were armed with several firearms and wanted to fight with police. The caller was reportedly waiting for the officers in the parking lot of the Rockland Police Department, smashing bottles on the pavement while they waited.

Several Officers exited the building and made contact with multiple juveniles, who were waiting there. Specific details have not been released, but police say an altercation took place, including with the caller who had claimed to be armed with several firearms and was yelling at officers that they wanted to fight. This person is known to have had access to firearms in the past and so police subdued them with a Taser.

Two juveniles were taken into custody without serious injury and transported to Pen Bay Medical Center for evaluation and possible detox. One juvenile was charged with terrorizing, disorderly conduct, and refusing to submit to arrest or detention. The other juvenile was charged with disorderly conduct and refusing to submit to arrest or detention.

At approximately 7:00 that same evening, Rockland Police responded to a home on James Street after receiving information that the resident had found a grenade. As a precaution, Rockland Police Officers evacuated nearby homes.

The Maine State Police Bomb Team and the Maine Fire Marshal's Office responded to the scene and inspected the grenade. While it was a real grenade, the experts said it had been altered and was not a danger to anyone. Apparently, it was left behind by a former resident who had moved out in 2015. The Bomb Team removed the grenade and will dispose of it safely.
