In the past four months Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe has made misleading claims about Eskom and South Africa’s energy crisis while attempting to shift blame not only away from himself, but also government.

In May 2022, Mantashe claimed during an interview that Eskom had 15 000 megawatts (MW) of generation capacity “standing idle”.

In June 2022, he told News24 it was disingenuous and unfair to blame the government for the energy crisis or load shedding. He also sought to distance himself from blame by pointing out that Eskom fell under the Department of Public Enterprises.
