Ford Motor Company is recalling 157,306 of its 2021 F-150 pickup trucks due to issues with the windshield wipers.

The National Highway Transport Safety Administration (NHTSA) published the recall notice on its website Mar. 11. The recall applies to certain 2021 Ford F-150 vehicles.

According to the NHTSA notice, some of the pickups may have a front windshield wiper motor that has become inoperative, causing the wipers to fail.

“ Inoperative windshield wipers can reduce visibility in certain conditions, increasing the risk of a crash,” the NHTSA said.

According to the defect report,  the primary causes of the inoperative or poorly performing wipers are poor quality motor brush plate spot welding, insufficient motor magnet adhesive being applied and insufficient motor nut assembly torque.

The dealers will replace the front windshield wiper motor, free of charge.

Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed Apr. 18; however, owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 for further information.

The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

Ford is facing a separate class action lawsuit alleging 2018-2020 Ford F-150 trucks suffer from excessive oil consumption due to a defect in their 5-liter Ti-VCT V8 Coyote engines. Lead plaintiff William Kennedy wants to represent other Ford F-150 owners and lessees in a class action lawsuit filed against the carmaker in Ontario, Canada.

Kenndy says that the excessive oil consumption is caused by defective piston and oil rings in the engine that allows excess oil to leak from the crankcase and into the chamber where it is burned off into the exhaust.
